Over the coming weeks, I’d like to share a topic with you that is not only important to me – but one that stems deeply from my own experience.
A topic that is far too rarely discussed honestly.
The spiritual path is often seen as a path of healing, growth and inner development. And that is exactly what it is.
Yet it is precisely on this path that the greatest pitfalls often arise.
Not loud. Not obvious. But quiet, creeping – and often only recognisable once you are already caught up in it.
Why is it so important to me to talk about this?
Because I know how it feels.
My husband Mauro and I have experienced first-hand how a path that was supposed to lead to personal strength can instead result in dependence and control. For many years, we were part of a structure that did not foster growth – but rather stifled it.
Leaving wasn’t easy. It was a process. A letting go. A rediscovery.
And it was precisely from this experience that the desire arose within me to prevent people from losing themselves on their own journey.
Because that is exactly what happens more often than many people realise.
People often embark on their journey out of a genuine longing. They want to understand, grow, heal and develop. Yet at the same time, they bring with them something they often fail to recognise:
Unresolved emotions. Insecurity. The need for support.
And this is precisely where the first pitfalls arise.
When we are not clear within ourselves, we start looking outside. We believe more readily, trust more readily, follow more readily. Not because we are weak – but because we have not yet truly come to know ourselves.
And this is precisely where dependencies arise. In relationships, in groups, with teachers.
That is why self-awareness is so important.
Not to scare people. But to raise awareness.
Everyone has the right to a free, self-determined and healthy path. But without clarity about the potential pitfalls, this path can easily lead in a direction that achieves exactly the opposite.
Emotional and mental strain, dependency, losing one’s own voice or even manipulation are not isolated cases. They arise where people stop trusting themselves – and begin to relinquish their responsibility.
The term ‘guru’ is often misunderstood in this context.
Originally, it means nothing other than that which brings light into the darkness. Yet this light does not belong to the teacher. It arises within the person themselves.
A true teacher will never bind you to them. They will always lead you back to yourself.
They will not keep you small. Instead, they will remind you of who you are.
And that is precisely what this series is about.
Over the coming weeks, I will share with you the most common pitfalls on the spiritual path:
Emotions, dependency, fanaticism, blind faith, apathy and money.
Each of these has the power to lead you astray – if you fail to recognise it.
This first post is an invitation.
An invitation to take a closer look. An invitation to become more aware of yourself. And an invitation not to walk your path blindly – but with your eyes wide open.
Because your path belongs to you.
And nothing and no one should ever take you away from it.
Gianna
