When life slowly loses its colour
Apathy is one of the quietest yet most dangerous pitfalls on the spiritual path. It often creeps up on you and therefore goes unnoticed for a long time. Whilst many people believe that spirituality must automatically lead to greater awareness, compassion and vitality, an unbalanced spiritual development can have exactly the opposite effect: emotional detachment, indifference and the loss of a genuine zest for life.
A person who begins to withdraw further and further from everyday life often loses not only their connection to the world – but also their connection to themselves.
The silent form of inner emptiness
Interest in other people, in relationships, responsibility, joy, creativity and real life gradually wanes. What often remains is a state of inner emptiness, which is mistakenly interpreted as spiritual serenity.
Yet apathy does not mean peace. It often signifies emotional exhaustion, an inner retreat or a creeping numbness towards life. Some people believe they must overcome feelings, desires and human needs in order to grow spiritually.
Yet it is precisely through this that they lose their vitality.
When spirituality becomes detached from life
This becomes particularly problematic within spiritual groups or organisations that devalue everyday life and portray withdrawal from the world as a sign of spiritual development. People then begin to focus solely on spiritual matters, whilst neglecting their relationships, their zest for life and their day-to-day responsibilities.
This can lead to social isolation, emotional detachment and a dangerous loss of touch with reality. A person who loses touch with life often loses their natural curiosity as well.
The world becomes grey and meaningless. Spiritual seeking turns into inner emptiness.
True spirituality brings one to life
Many people do not even notice this state at first, because they believe they are particularly calm or ‘above it all’. Yet true spirituality does not leave a person feeling empty – it brings them to life.
It broadens one’s perspective on life, deepens compassion, enhances joy and fosters the ability to live consciously and fully in the here and now. A spiritually healthy person never loses their interest in life. They love the beauty of the world, take an interest in people, and remain curious and open to new experiences.
They recognise that life itself is the greatest teacher.
At the heart of life
Human beings are composed of body, soul and spirit. All three aspects require attention, care and development. Anyone who trains only their spirit whilst neglecting their body and soul loses their natural balance.
Spiritual development therefore does not mean withdrawing from life – but rather a deeper connection with it. True spirituality is not shown by how far one has distanced oneself from life, but by how consciously, humanly and lovingly one can stand right in the midst of life.
The ability to marvel, to feel, to laugh, to learn and to allow oneself to be moved is not a sign of spiritual weakness – but a sign of inner health.
Perhaps you, too, have seen how easily people withdraw from life and, in doing so, slowly lose their vitality.
Never forget: you are here to have experiences. To feel. To learn. And to experience life with an open heart.
