My thoughts on the Twelve Days of Christmas

The Rauhnächte – also known as ‘the holy nights’ – are the twelve nights between Christmas and Epiphany. Depending on the tradition, the first night begins on 21 or 24 December. During this period – between the solar year (365 days) and the lunar year (354 days) – a gap emerges in the calendar: 11 days and 12 nights, which were already regarded as ‘timeless’ in pre-Christian cultures. A threshold time. A magical time. An invitation to be still.

These nights were regarded as special gateways: between the years, between the worlds, between the old and the new. The veil to the spiritual world is thinner, access to our intuition and inner guidance more open.

What significance do they have for us humans?

For us modern people, the Rauhnächte offer a rare opportunity to step off the treadmill. They provide space for reflection, looking back, and consciously setting our sights on the coming year. It is as though life itself is giving us a break – a bridge on which we can honour the old and welcome the new.

Especially in a world full of sensory overload, to-do lists and end-of-year stress, the Rauhnächte are a gift for the soul. An invitation to pause. To feel. To remember what really matters.

How do they affect us?

Whether we believe in them or not – this time has an effect. Subtle. Deep. Still. Many people experience a heightened sensitivity, emotional depth or inexplicable dreams during these days. The inner voice grows louder. Old issues resurface. Not because ‘something is wrong’, but because our system is seizing the opportunity to let go, to purify, to clarify.

Those who consciously navigate these nights can deliberately bid farewell to the old, recognise blockages and set their inner course for the new year.

Do the Twelve Days of Christmas still have an effect even if we do nothing?

Yes – they do have an effect. Even without our conscious intervention. But if we ignore them, suppress them or drown them out with consumerism, then these inner processes often ‘happen’ unconsciously: in the form of inner restlessness, sleep disturbances, tension or vague moods.

Those who live them consciously can channel this energy. Those who are unaware of them may be moved by it – without knowing why. That is why opening oneself mindfully to these nights is an act of self-care.

The significance of the 12 nights for the coming 12 months

Each of the 12 Rauhnächte symbolises a month in the coming year:

1st night → January
2nd night → February

12th night → December

What we dream, experience, feel or realise can provide clues to the theme of each month. It is therefore powerful to keep a diary, set yourself daily intentions or create small rituals – for example, based on the five MGSGT pillars: breath, mental focus, body, energy, meditation.

What if more people took an interest in the Twelve Days of Christmas?

… then more people wouldn’t simply ‘carry on’ with the year, but would consciously start afresh. They would pause, feel, forgive, realign – and connect on a deeper level: with themselves, with life, and with what really matters. Fewer frantic New Year’s resolutions – more genuine change. Less focus on the external – more clarity within. More peace in the world – because more people find peace within themselves.

For this magical transitional time this year, I wish you moments of inner stillness, strength and awareness.
